In 1945, when Robert Moses took over planning for the highway, it was called the Clove Lakes Expressway. Farther down the road in Clove Valley, churches and buildings were cleared to make way to create the Interstate 278, better known as the ever traffic-ridden Staten Island Expressway. ![]() Peter's Cemetery, which is the oldest Roman Catholic cemetery on Staten Island, located at the juncture of Clove Road, Bement Avenue and Tyler Place. However, there were once horse trails in the park that were used by riders from the long-gone Clove Lakes Stables. Boating and fishing are still available on the lakes. With its three lakes, ponds and streams, it sits opposite the public Sliver Lake Golf course. Today, a Staten Island centerpiece, Clove Lakes Park, still runs along much of Clove Road. Although the Zoo remains, many of these venues are long gone and have been torn down to make way for new homes. ![]() You could also find a smattering of restaurants and diners - and many places to play in between - such as the Staten Island Zoo, Clove Lakes Stables and the Columbian Lyceum (with a bowling alley), to mention a few. From the base of Clove at Richmond Terrace, there was the old Weissglass Stadium. In days gone by, it seemed like recreation highway might have been an appropriate name for the 4.4-mile-long Clove Road. ![]()
